Heifer's Mission
The mission of Heifer International is to work with communities to end hunger and poverty and care for the earth.
Vision Statement The vision of Heifer International is a world of communities
living together in peace and equitably sharing the resources of a healthy planet.
Call to Action
"Passing on the gift" is fundamental to Heifer International's approach to sustainable development. As people share the offspring of their animals, their knowledge, resources, and skills with others, an expanding network of hope, dignity, and self-reliance is created that reaches around the globe.
Faith Heritage Statement
Heifer International was founded in 1944 by Church of the Brethren educator Dan West. His vision of a worldwide program to end hunger and poverty was born of his Christian faith. From the beginning, the vision has encompassed all spiritual paths and all people who understood that to serve God, we serve our brothers and sisters. Today, Heifer comprises people of faith working together around the world to realize its vision.
Heifer's History
In the 1930s, a civil war raged in Spain . Dan West (pictured right), a Midwestern farmer and Church of the Brethren youth worker, ladled out cups of milk to hungry children on both sides of the conflict. It struck him that what these families needed was "not a cup, but a cow." He asked his friends back home to donate heifers, a young cow that has not borne a calf, so hungry families could feed themselves. In return, they could help another family become self-reliant by passing on to them one of their gift animal's female calves.
The idea of giving families a source of food rather than short-term relief caught on and has continued for about 60 years. As a result, families in 128 countries have enjoyed better health, more income and the joy of helping others...
Canada Strategic Plan
A strategic planning session was held for Heifer Canada in April of 2007. Community partners, Heifer Canada staff and representatives from Heifer Headquarters in Little Rock met for two days at Shekinah Retreat Centre to provide a framework for the direction for our work for the next 5 years. The plan is currently in draft form and an approved version will be posted by the fall of this year.
